Prince of Cats, art and story by Ronald Wimberly: It's a comic that's both a retelling of Romeo and Juliet (by me mate Billy Shakes) in 80s -- I want to say Harlem, but it's been too long, definitely a big US city though -- and a PoV shift to the titular Prince of Cats, Tybalt. It was okay. Unfortunately, I think I was missing about 80% of the cultural cues I should have been getting, so I didn't get as much from it as I could have. The setting and PoV shifts didn't really bring anything new and instead made it predictable, because it's, you know, Romeo and Juliet. Also, the art didn't grab me.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl v1, by Ryan North (story) and Erica Henderson (art): That is certainly a published comic book. My issue with Squirrel Girl is that it's quite good at Squirrel Girl (and assorted peeps) but quite bad at... everything else. And even when it's not bad, it falls into "so close and yet SO FAR" for me. I especially don't like that the non-Squirrel Girl/established Marvel characters are flattened into caricatures. The Doctor Doom arc could have been SO GREAT and instead it was... that. The art is nice, though.
Spider-Gwen v1, by Jason Latour (story) and Robbi Rodriguez (art): I enjoyed this greatly! The art's not really my thing, but I like Gwen A LOT (as long time readers of this blog will know, that's A Thing with me) and the reimagination of the Marvel characters in this new universe are really interesting. FELICIA, omg (and Matt Murder-dock is a hilarious pun).

And not until I've finished reading Le Déchronologue, because I need to finish reading it before yuletide sign-ups end and see if I still want to request it then.

CURRENTLY WATCHING
Airing shows:
Star Wars Rebels: I was meh on the season premiere, but last week's ep gave EXCELLENT MAUL. This week's upcoming ep promises to focus on Sabine, who is my FAVOURITE and so I am looking forward to it immensely.
Lucifer: Trixie continues to be adorable, Mazikeen continues to have chemistry with everyone, Dr Linda continues to take no shit, the new girl is pretty fun so far and so's Mom. On the other hand, AMENADIEL NO.
Completed shows
Luke Cage: On episode 6 (finished 5, haven't started 6). It's okay so far, but Claire just showed up so I hope it picks up! (Also, lol at them working in the Retro Power Man look. A++ would lol again)
Nirvana in Fire: Weirdly enough I am at the exact same place in this as in Luke Cage. To wit: finished 5, haven't started 6. Am greatly enjoying this, even if I am confused by ALL THE CHARACTERS. They change costumes and/or surroundings a lot and I'm mildly faceblind, so it's not great. I can tell maybe five people apart for sure and have about three names to go around. On the other hand: Lady General/Lady Spy! I am here for this.
Miraculous Ladybug: It's cute. Superheroes in Paris! Not an all white cast, yes THANK YOU. (I cannot fucking stand Hollywood Paris -- it doesn't look like the Paris I know at all.) Have seen one episode so far. It was the English dub, I wanted the Korean one.

I don't know if I want to read it.
On the one hand: WANDA MAXIMOFF ♥!
On the other hand: issue #6 used French national tragedies in a really crass way that really soured me on it.
On the third, tentacular, hand: It doesn't matter whether I read this comic or not. Really, it doesn't! Because I, being French, do not count as a costumer for Marvel in the first place! Seriously, folks. I cannot boycott shit even when I want to, because I am not a costumer. It's really that simple. I cannot vote with my dollars, because Marvel would not have been getting my dollars anyway (or my euros).
On the fourth, robot, hand: I feel like nobody gives a single fuck how offensive Scarlet Witch #6 was. I haven't seen anyone else say anything about it. And that's fine, not everyone has to be offended by the same things! I just feel a little alone. (I suppose Marvel doesn't have to care if they lose my business.)
On the fifth hand: I don't know. I guess this makes me not a real fan.
Often when I pass the place where I've hung original artwork of Gwen Stacy on one wall facing original artwork of Wanda Maximoff on the other, I think about how cool a team-up between those two would be.
I think I need some sort of three strikes system, like "If you feel the need to vent about X more than three times, time to consider if getting rid of X in your life wouldn't be a good idea". (Not that this is always feasible, but. You know.)
MY DRAWINGS ARE TOO BIG! Seriously. I have a pastel work that's too big for my art folder. That's never happened before; usually I feel a little self-conscious about how much bigger than my works the folder is. I need a new folder.
I also need to figure out if my scanner drivers survived the recent system reboot and how to scan gigantic artwork.
I had semi-impromptu lunch with one the fandom folks today and it was lovely ♥!
We spent the entire time talking in French. I don't think I've ever spent this long speaking about fandom in French before.
In 1862, Gustave Flaubert published a novel, Salammbô, in which Hannibal Barca is a character. I haven't read it.
This is mostly because the novel is entirely straight-faced about and in part responsible for how popular the image of Carthaginians sacrificing children is -- and I am always very wary of taking the words of the victors about the habits of the people they commited genocide upon. (Flaubert, by necessity, drew only on Roman sources.)
Also, it takes place right after the First Punic War, while Hannibal is still a child -- by all accounts his role in the novel is minimal -- and I'm really more about the Second than First Punic War.
That said, I did enjoy what I saw of it in the tome 2 of the Koblenz comic (Marcher dans Carthage une nuit sans lune) -- the comic had some very pointed commentary about how purity != virginity, too, which I appreciated -- especially the veil of Tanith, that was some awesome stuff. Anyway, I have the Lone Sloane/IN SPACE adaptation of the Flauber novel by Druillet somewhere, I think, maybe I should read that.
Anyway, not only did the novel give its name to one pf my favourite Indochine song, Salombo (Hanoi 2006 orchestral version), but I recently discovered it's also given its name to a pastry.
So naturally I had to try it. It's okay. It's a lot like an eclair.

Gwen Variants (Marvel Comics Covers)

The canon is a series of variant covers Marvel put out last year to promote the Spider-Gwen comic launch. Each cover reimagines Gwen Stacy as one (or more) Marvel character.
I like Gwen Stacy a lot. I think she's super smart and really kind and amazingly brave, be that in Spider-Gwen or the movies or Ults Spidey. I love canon-adjacent AUs too, especially role reversal AUs (I hesitate to call these canon-divergent, but they could be!), so this fandom is basically two great tastes that taste great together!
I'm just going to direct you to the relevant part of my yuletide letter from last year for prompts, because it is HELLA LONG. Pick any and all Gwens you want and feel free to mix and match prompts as you wish.

The Loki + Verity friendship is a thing of beauty and I love it so much. This series has a brilliant narrative about the role of stories in our lies and what it means to be a Trickster. It's about Loki achieving redemption, at long last and on his terms (long version here).

The canon is a series of variant covers Marvel put out last year to promote the Spider-Gwen comic launch. Each cover reimagines Gwen Stacy as one (or more) Marvel character.
I like Gwen Stacy a lot. I think she's super smart and really kind and amazingly brave, be that in Spider-Gwen or the movies or Ults Spidey. I love canon-adjacent AUs too, especially role reversal AUs (I hesitate to call these canon-divergent, but they could be!), so this fandom is basically two great tastes that taste great together!
I'm just going to direct you to the relevant part of my yuletide letter from last year for prompts, because it is HELLA LONG. Pick any and all Gwens you want and feel free to mix and match prompts as you wish.

The Loki + Verity friendship is a thing of beauty and I love it so much. This series has a brilliant narrative about the role of stories in our lies and what it means to be a Trickster. It's about Loki achieving redemption, at long last and on his terms (long version here).

OR TIMETRAVEL ADVENTURES, why should Yoko get all the fun timetravelling, I'm sure the Vineans have the tech somewhere.
I would love it forever if you wrote any sort of Vinean worldbuilding. What's it like for Khany to be older than her mom and have her twin be six years old?

Yuletide reveal post!
Jan. 5th, 2016 09:42 pmLike I said previously, I wrote 8 fics for yuletide: 1 assignments, 6 full-length treats and 1 madness treat (presented here more or less in the order in which I wrote them). Now you get to hear me talk about them and be a giant nerd. At length.
Because I wrote this fic ON THE PLANE. I did everything on that bloody flight, from canon review (canons I could have reviewed from my hard-drive: Agent of Asgard, Spider-Gwen, Mulan) to brainstorming to writing to editing to... Yeah. Everything but post the thing.
You wouldn't know this from the posting date though, because it's dated as one day BEFORE my flight, for reasons of it being a meta joke for it to be posted on the solstice (makes sense if you read the fic). I don't think anyone caught it, but I am ridiculously proud that I thought of this meta reference so now you get to hear about my brilliance.
Loki's feelings about yuletide that prompt Verity's "Wow. You're actually a gigantic sap." are totally my feelings about Yueltide and fic exchanges in general. Whatever, I'm a sap, I own it.
I really like " "I'm the Skald," Loki said. "The mythmaker at the end of everything. The narrator of sinners and sorcerers. The deceiver. The storyteller." " as a line, but my favourite is "There was something ugly in the way Loki said that last word, something twisted and sharp like barbed wire.". I'm quite fond of "a campfire vigil for the internet age" as a phrase.
(Doom actually is signed up for yuletide, but he's changed accounts to one Loki doesn't know about. It's cool, Loki is going to write his old account a fic anyway.)

Then there were my yuletide gifts, of which I got A LOT. (Presented here in alphabetical order/grouped by fandom.)
In "Carthaginian mythology" alone, I got three (3!) and to think this was the fandom I thought was the least likely to be written. I got basically every single permuation of the Dido + Tanith relationship possible. I got a fic where Tanith was waiting for Dido to arrive, I got a fic where Tanith followed Dido to Carthage and I got Dido/Tanith femslash. YES.
Y'all should go and read all my Carthaginian mythology fics because they're all awesome! But you should also read my Gwen Variants (Marvel Comics Covers) fics too, because they are ALSO awesome. I got notifs for two (2!) such fics in the main collection. I got Gwen!Hawkeye with MJ!Black Widow and I got Sorcerer Supreme Gwen Stacy on Battleworld.

I have exactly three DNWs: child abuse, incest and underage. Stay away from these three and everything else if fair game.

I will now proceed to go massively TL;DR in your general direction. You can pick and choose from my prompts and if you don't feel like any of them work for you, that's okay too. It's more important to me that you enjoy your yuletide. Besides, I will love anything (ANYTHING!) in these fandoms.
I usually prefer hopeful fics and I'm not really looking for porn, but if either of these are what you want to write, please go for it. I like plot more than introspection, but don't sweat it. If any prompts look like they go against these, go with the prompts. Anything you write for me will be lovely.
As far as I'm concerned, you can never go wrong with friendship fic. I do not even care if the people have met in canon or not. Just stick them on a roadtrip or whatever else and have them become friends, possibly against their will, and I will be happy. Seriously. "Friendships in unlikely places" are like catnip to me.
Other things I like are:
- Femslash, gen, het, poly and slash! I'm honestly not difficult. Most of my prompts are gen, but if you want to take them in a shippy direction, go right ahead! I've pointed out ships I ship, but if you ship something else, I'll gladly read it. I tend to ship ALL THE SHIPS.
- Canon-divergent AUs! Allllllll the “WHAT IF” fics. ALL OF THEM.
- Dinosaurs! I don't feel like I should have to justify my love of dinos. T-Rex, velociraptor, triceratops, plesiosaurus, stegosaurus, it's all good to me. Because DINOSAURS.
- Fandom AUs! Or better yet, fandom not!AUs, in which the canon is exactly the same, except everyone's in fandom!
- Identity porn! When someone (or several people) have secret identities (fannish, superheroic, all of the above, etc) and their interactions change depending on who's presenting as what at any given time.
- IN SPAAAAAAAAACE! Like canon, but IN SPACE.
- People on opposite side who care about each other! Whether it's enemies-turned-(grudging)-friends or friends-turned-(grudging)-enemies or any other variation on this theme, I love this trope very dearly.
- Superpowers! Someone gets merged with Kree DNA or is a mutant or is the ambassadors of the Amazons.
- Timetravel! I love all the kinds of timetravel. The ones that create paradoxes and the ones that don't; the ones that are stable and the ones that aren't; the ones with alternate pasts/presents/futures and all the rest. Just. All the timetravel, yeah?
- Worldbuilding! Fuck yeah, worldbuilding. Tell me everything about a tiny (or not so tiny) canon detail. Show the parts of the world the canon never goes to. TELL ME ABOUT THE STORIES THEY TELL IN THAT UNIVERSE. (Seriously. Rewrite canon as a legend from that universe, that would be amazing.)

I had a fandom friend over for yesterday/today (May 8 and 9) and it was great fun. Yesterday, we went to Trinity College to see the Book of Kells and we ended up taking a tour, which was enormous amounts of fun, and seeing the Brian Baru exposition in the Old Library, then had dinner then watched Amazing Spider-Man 2. Today we wanted to go see Dublin Castle, but we missed our bus stop and didn't have time, so we had shawarma instead.

Summary: The History of the Second Punic War keeps changing, Gwen Stacy keeps having to go back to fix it and Hannibal Barca and Scipio Africanus keep meeting for the first time under different circumstances.
Author's Note: This is the first draft of what ended up being Punica Fides. It's very different from that fic, as you can see from the character list.
In Johnny and the Bomb, Terry Pratchett postulates the existence of the Trousers of Time, where sometimes History goes down one leg and sometimes down the other. Ancient Romans wore togas instead of trousers.

Gwen Stacy got into Yuletide!

dudski has a very nice and detailed post about every step of the whole thing. I never thought I'd ever be mentionned in anything ressembling a wank report, but this makes me look like a hero coming in after the last minute to save the day so I'm okay with it.It's true that Gwen was announced as being back in in answer to my comment, but I think if had been anyone else making that comment, the result would have been the same.
I hesitated to post it, because I didn't want to impose. Then they kept replying to other inquiries. So I posted. Between the moment I started my comment and the moment I posted, an offer to include characters missing from nominations was made. I came back to edit it in into my comment and change my icon to my Gwen Stacy icon (in case anyone was curious what the edit was).
Then I wandered away, because I didn't expect a reply at all, much less a positive one.
In all honesty, I was resigned to Gwen not making it in this year. I just wanted to show people, when they'd be looking back on this years from now (because you know they will), that Gwen Stacy fans weren't making unreasonable demands.
As a result of me walking away from the computer, yuletide-coal reacted to Gwen getting in faster than I did. (Also, I love that this thread is just above the previous.)
That's pretty much how the end of it unfolded from my point of view. I'm just really glad Gwen got in, you guys! And I can now add
Also, I'm naming my new PC Gwen, because since I'm transferring all the memory, it will essentially be the same PC with a different casing and if this yuletide has told me anything it's that "same memory =/= same person", apparently.
In conclusion: GWEN ♥!
